How to Deal with Hair Damage

How to Deal with Hair Damage from the Summer

While summer weather brings tons of fun, those fun times can wreak havoc on your hair - especially if they involve any activity that takes place outside. Overexposure to the sun’s harsh UV rays can do a number on the best of color jobs, while the harsh chemicals in swimming pools and hot tubs can really dry hair out.

So what’s a girl to do? At Kenneth’s Hair Salons & Day Spas in Central Ohio, we know looking your best is important to you no matter what the weather is like outside. Our professional stylists are here to lend a helping hand when it comes to sun-damaged hair. We offer many services and treatments that revive damaged hair and bring the natural luster back - just in time for fall football parties!

In the meantime, there are a few steps you can take on your own to prevent sun damage or revive damaged hair, returning it to its gorgeous pre-summer sizzle.

Ways to keep your hair looking beautiful all summer long

#1: Trim it up

This step is best done before the summer starts. Harsh sunlight is more likely to cause hair damage to hair that’s already in a weakened state, so getting your hair cut at the beginning of the summer is a good idea. Trim up those split ends or damaged sections and have your stylist apply a conditioning treatment. It’s best to try to minimize hair damage as much as possible before the season gets into full swing.

While we’re on the topic, it’s not a bad idea to get a midsummer trim, too, just to make sure you’re keeping your hair healthy and catching any damage before it gets too bad.

#2: Detangle gently

Weak hair is more easily damaged than healthy hair, so if your hair is sun-damaged, you’ll want to be extra careful when you comb it out. In fact, many hairstylists recommend that you detangle hair with your fingers rather than using a brush or a comb during summer months. Hair that’s exposed to lots of sun, chlorine, or saltwater is especially susceptible to breakage, so comb and brush gently. If you must use a comb, use one with wide teeth. You don’t want to make the situation worse!

#3: Replace lost moisture

It’s a great idea to be proactive and replace lost moisture throughout the summer months. There are lots of conditioning shampoos and deep-conditioning products like hydrating hair masks on the market. These products facilitate hair damage repair, replacing lost moisture and sealing it in with special ingredients that help guard against future moisture loss. Our go to at home treatment is our Indulge Mask, made of hydrating moroccan, organ and avocado, it packs a powerful hydrating punch. These ingredients are great for putting moisture back into your hair. You can do this treatment in the comfort of your own home by applying it to clean, damp hair then wrapping it in a towel for ten minutes or so. If your hair damage is excessive, Kenneth’s Salons offer therapeutic European elixir treatments that are perfect for strengthening hair damaged by sun, saltwater, and chlorine while adding amazing shine.

#4: Treat only areas that need it

One of the complaints that many have against the use of moisturizing products is that they often weigh hair down, making it limp and lifeless. The trick with moisturizing products is to use them only where they’re needed. If your ends are splitting, focus your moisturizing efforts just on the ends; leave the rest of your head alone. It might make sense to visit Kenneth’s Salon for a quick midsummer Damage Control treatment, too.

#5: Fight the frizz

Many women have hair that tends to get frizzy in summer humidity. If this happens to you, fight back by rinsing hair with cool water rather than warm. This helps seal the hair cuticle and keep moisture inside the hair shaft. Do it every time you wash to help keep the frizzies under control. You can also fight frizz with keratin treatments and other specialized conditioning treatments that are designed to wrap the hair shaft in a protective coating of protein, adding softness and shine while also smoothing down hair strands. These treatments often have the added benefits of improving manageability and dramatically reducing drying time. A bonus when your summer do has to be done on the run!
