Summer Hair SOS: How to Protect Your Extensions from Pools, Hot Tubs, and Sunscreen Damage

If pool parties and hot tubs are calling your name this summer, we’re with you. But while you’re making memories in the sun, don’t forget—your hair extensions might not be having quite as much fun. Between chlorine, copper, and even certain ingredients in your sunscreen, summer can take a serious toll on your strands.

Pools and hot tubs are filled with chemicals designed to keep the water clean. But those same ingredients can wreak havoc on both natural hair and extensions—causing discoloration, dryness, and even long-term damage. Here's what you need to know before taking the plunge.

Why Pools and Hot Tubs Don’t Play Nice with Extensions

Why Pools and Hot Tubs Don’t Play Nice with Extensions

The main chemical offenders are chlorine and copper.

  • Chlorine is a strong disinfectant that strips moisture and color from both natural hair and extensions.
  • Copper, found in pool plumbing or as a byproduct of algaecides, can oxidize and bond with hair proteins, causing discoloration—especially in lighter shades.

The result? Extensions and natural hair may turn pink, orange, or green, and feel dry or brittle.

Can It Really Cause Long-Term Damage?

Unfortunately, yes. These chemicals can weaken the adhesive bonds, keratin tips, or tapes used in your extensions, leading to slippage, premature loosening, or uneven wear.

Once damage occurs, it’s more than cosmetic—compromised bonds can pull on your natural hair and shorten the lifespan and safety of your extensions.

How Can I Tell If My Extensions Have Been Affected?

Watch for these signs:

  • Unexpected color changes—such as pink, peach, brassy, or green tones
  • Dry, tangled, or rough-feeling ends
  • Increased shedding or breakage
  • Loose tape, bead, or bond movement

If you notice any of these, don’t panic—but do address it quickly.

Swim-Safe Tips to Protect Your Hair Extensions

Swim-Safe Tips to Protect Your Hair Extensions

Enjoy your pool days and keep your hair looking great with these stylist-approved tips:

  • Pre-wet your hair with clean water before swimming to limit chlorine absorption.
  • Use a protective leave-in conditioner. We recommend Elixir 11, Kenneth’s top-selling leave-in, which hydrates, detangles, and offers UV protection.
  • Braid your hair or wear it in a bun to minimize exposure.
  • Wear a swim cap, especially the softer silicone types, for extra protection.
  • Rinse your hair with fresh water as soon as you’re out of the pool or hot tub.

Watch Out for Sunscreen, Too

Sunscreen is essential for your skin, but some ingredients can discolor your hair—especially extensions or lighter tones.

The main culprit is Avobenzone, a common UV filter. When it contacts chlorinated water, it can oxidize and bind to hair, causing pink, orange, or green discoloration—especially on blonde or light hair, but any type can be affected.

To protect your hair from sunscreen damage:

  • Check your sunscreen label for Avobenzone (also called Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane).
  • Apply sunscreen carefully to avoid your hair or scalp.
  • Opt for mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide—they’re generally safer for hair and extensions.
  • Rinse your hair thoroughly after swimming or sun exposure to remove any residue.

Checking labels can help keep your hair color bright and your extensions looking their best all season.

I recently had my hair cut with Molly and I am very happy with the result. She took the time to advise me on how to make changes now to best grow into a new style that I want. The final result was very close to the picture that I brought in to show to my stylist. I loved the fact that Molly didn't talk while she was at work cutting my hair. She only asked pertinent questions regarding my desires and answered all questions that I had for her. The one question that I did ask her was how much longer did she have at the Academy, and she replied that she would continue through the end of October. So quick, book an appointment now at the Academy, or visit her when she becomes part of the team at the Kingsdale location Nov 1. I know that's where I will be going for my next haircut. Thanks Molly!
