What is a Lash Lift, and Where Can I Get One?

Amp Up the Glam with a Visit to One of Our Central Ohio Spas

Even if you knew nothing about them as people, anyone could see that Twiggy and Audrey Hepburn had at least one noticeable thing in common: long, full eyelashes that women wished they had, too. No amount of eyelash curlers, serums, growth formulas, or mascara could make the average lady’s eyelashes come close to the ideal these two model-actresses possessed. Today, it’s easy to achieve envy-worthy lashes with a simple salon and spa service called a lash lift.

During a lash lift, your natural eyelashes basically get a perm, without damage that eyelash extensions can potentially cause. A lash lift changes the shape and color of your natural lashes, so it’s all you with no tiny strands to fall out or adhesives that might cause breakage.

If you live in Central Ohio, you don’t need to travel very far to get a high-quality lash lift near you. The eleven Kenneth’s Hair Salons and Day Spas locations are your go-to for beautification and relaxation.

How Does a Lash Lift Work?

The entire lash lift service at our day spas takes about 45 minutes, and all you have to do during it is lie down on your back with your eyes shut! Sounds relaxing, right?

When you arrive for your lash lift appointment, your professional esthetician will lead you to a table - much like the ones we use for waxing - and, you’ll recline onto your back with your head nearest your technician, as if you’re getting a spa facial.

First, your esthetician will gently tape down your lower lashes so they don’t get tangled into your upper lashes. She will then apply a silicone pad to your eyelid, which acts as the curling rod and guard. The gentle adhesive on the back of the pad stays put, but isn’t painful to remove. The shape of the silicone pad is what creates the curve of your lashes, and the natural length of your lashes dictates which size silicone pad your esthetician will use for your lash lift. Too long, and your lashes won’t appear curled; too short, and only the root of your lashes will receive the perm!

A Kenneth’s licensed esthetician will then brush your lashes back to lay against the shield using an adhesive to hold them flat. Then, she’ll apply a series of three lotions to your lashes. The first softens your lashes’ natural pattern so they are receptive to the lift. The second is a setting lotion that makes them take the shape of the silicone pad. And the third and final lotion nourishes and conditions your newly-curled lashes so they feel soft and healthy. The application of each of these lotions takes about ten minutes each, and it does, faintly, smell like a perm - a smell you know well if you lived through the 80s and 90s!

During your lash lift, you might also want to have your eyelashes tinted a darker shade, to help them stand out against your skin tone.

How Long Does a Lash Lift Last? Will It Damage My Lashes?

A properly-done lash lift will last between six and eight weeks, especially if you follow after-care procedures to a T. As you approach the eight weeks, you will notice your curl gradually releasing.

The process won’t damage your eyelashes, but it’s important to only get a lash lift from a licensed esthetician and never attempt one on your own. The estheticians we employ at Kenneth’s are trained to provide professional lash lifts.

How Do I Take Care of My Eyelashes After a Lash Lift?

Everything you do - or don’t do - in the first 48 hours after a lash lift will help you maintain your results. Much like a regular perm, there are lots of dos and don’ts to follow so you look your best.

First, within the first 48 hours, you should not get your eyelashes wet. This includes water from washing your face or showering, or excessive sweat from working out. You also should not apply mascara of any kind to your lashes during this period. After 48 hours have passed, you can use mascara, but not waterproof formulas.

To help your eyelashes keep their shape, avoid crushing them by sleeping on your face (sleeping on your back is recommended for the best results)

Benefits of Lash Lifts

Aside from improving your appearance and making you look utterly gorgeous, lash lifts can also save you a lot of time getting ready in the morning. Applying make-up can already be time-consuming, so if you can eliminate curling your lashes and applying layer upon layer of mascara every day, or gluing on falsies, you’ll be out the door much more quickly than before.

Lash lifts can also save you money on mascara. Cheaply-made mascara doesn’t hold as well as premium brands, so you’re already forking over at least $20 per tube. Consider how much mascara you’ve had to use to get your lashes to hold the perfect curl - and the fact that your open mascara should be replaced every three months - plus the cost of fake lashes and adhesives and high-quality curling tools. Over the course of a year, we’re betting you spend quite a bit on your eyelashes!

Women who have received lash lifts report that they think they look more youthful and awake than before, which certainly helps with self-esteem and confidence! You can’t put a price on those.
