A Cornerstone of Kenneth’s Culture
There are certain people who become woven so deeply into a company’s culture that it becomes difficult to imagine the place without them.
For so many at Kenneth’s Salons and Spas, Lee Hammond is one of those people.
For the majority of her remarkable career, Lee was a cornerstone of our New Albany location, where generations of clients, coworkers, assistants, and young stylists came to know not only her extraordinary talent, but the energy, honesty, humor, and heart she brought into the salon every single day.
Over the years, she became known for many things. Her legendary color knowledge. Her tireless work ethic. Her ability to solve problems, coach others through challenges, and somehow still make people laugh in the middle of a busy salon day.
But if you ask the people who know her best what truly made Lee special, most of them will tell you the same thing:
She always showed up for people.
A Mentor, Teacher, and Standard Setter
For decades, Lee poured herself into this industry, her clients, and the people fortunate enough to work beside her. She mentored young stylists, calmed nerves, shared knowledge freely, and set a standard that quietly challenged everyone around her to become better.
Many of the stories shared about Lee revolve around hair. That makes sense. She taught generations of stylists everything from formulation theory to foil placement to client care. She had a reputation for approaching every guest with intention, detail, and genuine investment.
Cortney K. still remembers assisting Lee nearly two decades ago and being completely blown away watching her work with a level of confidence and technical ability that seemed almost unreal to a young stylist. Angela D. credited Lee with teaching her “almost everything” she knows about hair, while Amber C. reflected on how deeply Lee valued education and mentorship throughout her career.
But the memories people shared most often were not really about hair at all.
They were about humanity.
The Way Lee Showed Up for People
Morgan A. remembered Lee comforting her before maternity leave, telling her that the moment she saw her son for the first time, she would experience a kind of love unlike anything else in the world. Years later, that conversation still stayed with her.
Lydia shared that no matter how busy Lee was, she never left coworkers feeling unsupported. Before taking a break or leaving for the day, she always checked to see if anyone needed help.
Others remembered late nights fixing shelves in the dispense area, impromptu life advice, encouraging phone calls at 10 p.m., and moments where Lee’s calm guidance helped people stop overthinking and simply move forward.
That theme appeared again and again.
- Lee made people feel capable.
- She made people feel steadier.
- She made people feel cared for.
The Unforgettable Lee Moments
And somehow, alongside all of that, she also became the source of countless unforgettable “Lee moments.”
Coworkers fondly recalled her dancing and singing while mixing color, doing yoga stretches during meetings, passionately defending the importance of a properly made breakfast sandwich, headbanging to Foo Fighters while formulating color, loving U2, and talking everyone through challenges with her classic “don’t overcomplicate things.”
There was also a recurring sentiment that came through nearly every message submitted:
Lee never pretended to be anything other than herself.
People admired her honesty. Her humor. Her toughness. Her compassion. Her authenticity. In an industry built on connection, those qualities mattered just as much as technical excellence.
For many newer team members, even those who did not get the chance to work closely with Lee yet, her impact was still obvious. Rashmi Sabherwal, who is newer to the team, shared that simply seeing how deeply respected and appreciated Lee was had already shown her the importance of leaving a positive impact on others.
A Legacy That Lives Beyond the Chair
That kind of legacy cannot be manufactured.
It is built slowly through years of consistency, loyalty, mentorship, friendship, and care.
And perhaps that is what makes Lee Hammond’s retirement feel so significant to so many people. When someone spends decades helping shape the culture of a salon, the influence they leave behind reaches far beyond the chair they worked behind.
It lives on in the confidence of the stylists they mentored.
The standards they upheld.
The guests they made feel beautiful.
The friendships they built.
The laughter people still repeat years later.
And the example they quietly set for what it means to genuinely care about both the craft and the people around you.
Pictured above are some of the heartfelt messages left for Lee by her teammates—a testament to the lasting impact, mentorship, and legacy she has built throughout her career at Kenneth's.
While the photo captures only a glimpse of the appreciation shared by those who worked alongside her, a few messages help tell the story of the influence Lee has had on so many throughout her 38 years with Kenneth's:
"Oh Lee, I don't even know where to begin. You don't realize how impactful and monumental you've been for me. I've had I don't know how many people tell me to not pick you or why I asked you. Although you didn't have a choice, your legacy will live in this salon till the end. And you will always remain in my heart. Thank you for everything, and good luck on your next adventure. This thing we call life. I love you!!"— Nicole
"Lee Thank you for always taking the time to teach me how to formulate colors, especially reds."— Layne
"Lee, You were my first mentor and it was an honor learning from you. We have learned so much from you and are so proud of your legacy!"— Madeline
"Lee, I will miss you so much. Thank you for everything you taught me. It won't be the same without you."— Amber
Gratitude for a One-of-a-Kind Career
As Lee steps into retirement, there is excitement for everything ahead of her: time with family, new adventures, slower mornings, well-earned rest, and the freedom to finally put herself first after decades spent giving so much to everyone around her.
But there is also deep gratitude.
Because people like Lee help shape the soul of a company.
One coworker described her as “one of a kind.”
Another called her “a legend.”
Another simply said, “The salon will never be the same.”
They are all probably right.
The memories shared by Morgan, Angela, Lydia, Cortney, Amber, Mandy, Chasity, Angel, and so many others all echoed the same sentiment: people may retire from the salon floor, but they never truly leave the culture they helped build.
Thank You, Lee
Lee, thank you for the decades of artistry, leadership, humor, honesty, friendship, mentorship, and heart you brought to Kenneth’s Salons and Spas, especially to the New Albany team and the countless people fortunate enough to work alongside you there.
You will be deeply missed, endlessly appreciated, and always part of the story of who we are.
Enjoy every minute of this next chapter. You have more than earned it.
